A graded index for certain health conditions that have weather-sensitive side effects.
WHAT IS THE RELEVANCE?
For over 60 years, researchers mostly doctors, have tried to understand the effect of the weather on specific health conditions. Thousands of scientific research studies and reports establish a link between meteorological conditions (air pressure, temperature, humidity, etc.) and symptom intensity for various chronic diseases and health conditions.
Most of these studies, however, only consider a few patients. In other words, their database associated with various health conditions rarely represent more than a thousand patients and sometimes only a few dozen.
RESEARCH CONDUCTED FOR BLISLY
MeteoGlobale partnered with the emergency room at the Sacré-Coeur de Montréal hospital to gain access to a vast database, and with the CRIM, Computer Research Institute of Montreal, which uses artificial intelligence.
Environment Canada supplied weather data. 32,000 cases were analyzed, correlating emergency admission conditions and weather data between 2010 and 2015.
Health conditions were identified by two criteria: quality of scientific studies and the number of Canadians suffering from them. According to Statistics Canada, 60% of citizens of developed countries say they suffer from at least one of these: a migraine, high blood pressure, ischemic heart disease, asthma, and allergies.
THE BLISLY APP
Blisly in an application that offers a risk index for certain weather-sensitive health conditions:
- Green: low risk
- Yellow: moderate risk
- Red: high risk
- Sensitivity to weather variations is called “weather sensitivity”.
Not all patients are weather-sensitive, and those that are aren’t affected to the same degree. For example, two weather-sensitive persons suffering from migraines and living in the same area can react differently to weather variations.
That is why it is highly recommended to complete a daily journal on the app which is the starting point for greater personalization of the index.
