What is the Greenhouse effect?

greenhouse effect

The Greenhouse Effect is a phenomenon that occurs on all planets with an atmosphere.

The Earth’s atmosphere is a gaseous envelope that protects it. Air is mainly made up of a multitude of gases. Without greenhouse gases, the temperature at the earth’s surface would be less than 18 degrees.

The sun emits radiation that will be partly trapped by the atmosphere. The other part will pass through the atmosphere to reach the Earth. Solar energy is transformed into heat. As it heats up, the earth in turn releases heat. A part of these rays will be rejected towards the atmosphere. The other part is rebroadcasted towards the ground.

Greenhouse gases block some of the infrared rays. The stored heat allows the earth to have a pleasant temperature.
